About Brother thread
Brother sells two thread lines with different numbering. Embroidery thread uses numbers such as 900 for Black and 001 for White; Country thread uses 100 for Black and 000 for White. The same number can be a different color in each: in this data, 126 is Pumpkin in Embroidery thread and Dark Fuchsia in Country thread.
PES files store colors from Brother's thread chart, so Brother and Baby Lock machines often list Brother numbers for a design. Many models can also show other brands' numbers from the settings screen; check your machine manual.
How the matches are worked out
Swatches use the screen color values in the open-source Ink/Stitch thread palettes (GPL-3.0). HoopFile converts each color to CIELAB and compares it with the CIEDE2000 color-difference formula, then lists the thread with the smallest difference (ΔE). These are calculated suggestions, not the manufacturers' official conversion charts. Screens, lighting and thread sheen all change how a color looks, so check a printed color card or a sew-out before buying thread for a paid job.
- Very close
- ΔE up to 2. Usually hard to tell apart on the spool.
- Close
- ΔE up to 5. A good substitute for most designs.
- Approximate
- ΔE up to 10. Visible side by side; check before using.
- Large difference
- ΔE above 10. That line has nothing near this color, or see the note on black and white below.
Black and white need a second look. Some palettes record black as pure #000000 and others as a measured dark shade, and whites vary the same way, so a standard black can show a large difference against another brand's standard black. Choose by name for these, then compare spools.
Common questions
My machine shows a thread number I do not have. What do I use?
Find the number in the Embroidery thread table and read across to the Isacord, Madeira or Robison-Anton column. Make sure your machine is set to show Brother Embroidery thread numbers, not Country.
Does a DST file include Brother thread numbers?
No. Standard DST files store stitches and color changes but no thread colors, so any colors you see for a DST are assigned for preview. PES, JEF and VP3 files do carry colors; open one in the HoopFile viewer to see them.
Are Brother Embroidery and Country thread interchangeable?
Both are polyester embroidery threads for home machines, but their numbers differ. Compare by color, not number.
