HoopFile embroidery file conversion PEC → PES

Convert PEC to PES

Convert a standalone Brother PEC stitch file into a PES file for a workflow that asks for the PES container. This can help with legacy card-format designs, but adding PES does not recover missing editable artwork or guarantee support on a particular machine.

The two formats

.PEC · BROTHER

Brother PEC

Brother's embedded stitch block — the part of a PES file the machine actually reads. Some older machines and card writers expect it on its own.

.PES · BROTHER, BABY LOCK

Brother PES

Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.

What to watch for

A conversion, not an extension rename

PEC contains encoded stitches and palette information. HoopFile reads those records and writes PES version 1; simply renaming .pec to .pes does not perform this translation.

Missing project data cannot be restored

A standalone PEC does not provide the original digitising application's editable objects. The new PES is a machine stitch file, not a reconstructed source project.

Keep the original and test the output

Review colours and stitch order in compatible PES software, then follow your machine's transfer and hoop requirements. The original PEC is not modified by uploading it.
