Convert JEF to PES

People do this when they change machines. A Janome library is often years of accumulated designs, and the good news is that this is one of the friendlier conversions available: both formats store thread colours, both store the stitches the same way underneath, and nothing structural is lost crossing between them. The colours will shift slightly, and that is expected rather than a fault.

The two formats

.JEF · JANOME, ELNA

Janome JEF

Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.

.PES · BROTHER, BABY LOCK

Brother PES

Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.

What to watch for

Colours carry across, but the shades will move

JEF stores colours as indexes into Janome's own thread chart. PES stores them as indexes into Brother's. There is no exact correspondence between two manufacturers' thread ranges, so every colour lands on the nearest available Brother thread rather than an identical one. Expect small shifts, particularly in muted and mid-tone colours where the two charts are least alike. The blocks and their order are unaffected — only the shade assigned to each.

We write PES version 1, on purpose

Brother files in the wild carry version headers from #PES0001 to #PES0060, and an older machine will refuse a newer version outright. We write the original, #PES0001 — the version every Brother and Baby Lock machine since the PE-300 can open.

Hoop sizes do not translate between brands

A JEF was built for a Janome hoop, and Janome, Brother and Baby Lock do not use the same hoop dimensions. A design that filled a Janome hoop comfortably may not clear the nearest Brother one. The table above measures the design itself against common hoop sizes — check it before you assume a design that always worked will keep working.
