Brother PES
Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.
What to watch for
These colours came out of the file
PES stores a thread colour for every block, and that is what you are looking at. Shades are approximate in one direction only: PES records positions in Brother's thread chart rather than arbitrary colour values, so what you see is the chart entry, not a photograph of the thread.
Which PES version you have is worth knowing
Files in circulation carry version headers from #PES0001 to #PES0060. Older machines refuse newer versions outright, which is a common reason a design that opens fine on a computer will not load on the machine. If a file reads here but not on your machine, version mismatch is the first thing to suspect — converting it through this site rewrites it as version 1, the most widely readable.
Stitch count against size is the number worth reading
A dense design in a small area will pucker fabric that a lighter one sits flat on. There is no single correct ratio, but a count far out of proportion to the area is worth a test run on scrap.
