Convert JEF to DST

Move a Janome JEF design to a DST workflow for a compatible commercial embroidery machine. The stitch plan and change sequence can be translated, but JEF thread colours and Janome hoop settings do not become DST colour or hoop data. Keep the original thread chart for the operator.

The two formats

.JEF · JANOME, ELNA

Janome JEF

Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.

.DST · TAJIMA

Tajima DST

Written for Tajima commercial machines and read by nearly everything since. It stores stitch movements only — no thread colours at all, which is why a palette is assigned rather than read.

What to watch for

Save the Janome thread chart

JEF stores palette entries, but DST does not store those RGB colours. Send a separate colour sequence with the download. A thread block is a stitching step, not necessarily a different spool.

Long movements can add records

DST limits each axis of a single movement to 12.1 mm. Longer stitches and jumps are split when needed; the downloaded stitch count can therefore differ from the source statistics shown here.

Check the destination machine

Janome hoop information does not establish a fit on a Tajima or another DST-compatible machine. Confirm the embroidery area, transfer method and trim behaviour, then test on scrap fabric.
