Convert JEF to EXP
Use a JEF design in an EXP-based workflow while keeping its original stitch geometry as the starting point. The EXP download does not include the Janome colour palette. For BERNINA USB workflows, this tool produces the stitch file only, not companion colour and thumbnail files.
Stitch preview
JEF FILE PREVIEW · SAMPLE DESIGNChoosing a file uploads it for processing. Read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use before uploading.
Size comparison only, not a machine-compatibility check. Confirm the supported embroidery area in your machine manual.
The two formats
Janome JEF
Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.
Melco EXP
Melco and Bernina machines read EXP. Like DST it stores movement only; colours travel beside it in a separate INF file, so a converted EXP arrives uncoloured.
What to watch for
Thread colours need a separate reference
JEF contains palette entries; a standalone EXP does not. The preview remains a reference for the source thread order, but those colours are not embedded in the EXP download.
One download, not a BERNINA file set
HoopFile exports only .exp. It does not generate the .inf colour file or .bmp thumbnail used by BERNINA USB workflows. Check your model's instructions and prepare the remaining files in compatible software if needed.
A new format is not a new hoop
The conversion does not resize or re-digitise the JEF design. Compare its dimensions with the destination machine's usable embroidery area and check jumps and trims in the machine software.
