Convert EXP to JEF
Convert a standalone EXP into JEF for a compatible Janome or Elna machine. Because EXP has no embedded thread-colour palette, HoopFile assigns display colours and maps them to the JEF palette. Use the original colour chart to replace these placeholders before stitching.

Size comparison only, not a machine-compatibility check. Confirm the supported embroidery area in your machine manual.
The two formats
Melco EXP
Melco and Bernina machines read EXP. Like DST it stores movement only; colours travel beside it in a separate INF file, so a converted EXP arrives uncoloured.
Janome JEF
Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.
What to watch for
The JEF colours are placeholders
The download has JEF palette entries assigned to distinguish source blocks. They do not recover the designer's original thread numbers. Repeated blocks can use the same real spool.
Keep any original BERNINA companions
Only the EXP file is processed. If you have matching INF and BMP files, keep them with the original design and inspect the complete set in compatible software for its colour information.
Check Janome's usable embroidery area
The size comparison measures the stitching, not your selected machine hoop or supported file limits. If the JEF is absent from the machine's file list, check format support, transfer instructions and hoop settings.
