Convert PES to JEF

The mirror image of the conversion people do when they leave Janome for Brother — and just as safe. Both formats hold thread colours, both hold the stitch path the same way, and the design arrives intact. The thing to check is not the file but the hoop: Janome machines are unusually strict about size, and they express that strictness in a way that looks like the file has vanished.

The two formats

.PES · BROTHER, BABY LOCK

Brother PES

Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.

.JEF · JANOME, ELNA

Janome JEF

Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.

What to watch for

A Janome will hide a design rather than reject it

If the design is larger than the hoop the machine currently has assigned, many Janome models simply do not list it. There is no error and no explanation — the file looks like it failed to copy. Before you re-copy anything, check which hoop the machine thinks is fitted. The hoop table above tells you which sizes this design actually clears; leave about 10 mm of margin rather than filling a hoop to its stated maximum.

Colours carry across, but the shades will move

PES colours are indexes into Brother's thread chart, JEF colours are indexes into Janome's. Every colour lands on the nearest Janome equivalent rather than an identical one, so expect small shifts. The block order and the stitching are untouched.

Plain JEF, not JEF+

Janome later extended the format as JEF+ to carry larger designs and extra editing data. We write plain JEF, which is what the machines themselves read. If your workflow depends on JEF+ features in Janome's own software, this file will open but will not carry them.
