Convert PES to VP3

VP3 is the current Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff format, and it is one of the better targets to convert into: it holds thread colours, it holds large designs, and this conversion keeps both. The one thing to establish first is whether your machine actually wants VP3 — older Viking machines want HUS instead, and they will not open a VP3 at all.

The two formats

.PES · BROTHER, BABY LOCK

Brother PES

Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.

.VP3 · HUSQVARNA VIKING, PFAFF

Husqvarna VP3

The current Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff format. It carries thread colours, and unlike the older HUS it can hold larger designs.

What to watch for

VP3 or HUS — check which one your machine reads

VP3 replaced HUS. Machines from the VP3 era read both; machines from the HUS era read only HUS. If your machine is old enough that its manual talks about HUS, this file will not open on it, and nothing about the conversion can change that — no current software writes HUS, ours included.

Colours carry across, but the shades will move

PES stores colours as indexes into Brother's thread chart; VP3 stores its own. Every colour lands on the nearest equivalent rather than an identical one, so expect small shifts in mid-tones. The blocks and their order are unaffected.

Hoop sizes differ between brands

A design built for a Brother hoop may not sit comfortably in the nearest Viking or Pfaff one. The table above measures the design itself; check it against the hoop you actually own rather than assuming the sizes correspond.
