The two formats
.VP3 · HUSQVARNA VIKING, PFAFF
Husqvarna VP3
The current Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff format. It carries thread colours, and unlike the older HUS it can hold larger designs.
.DST · TAJIMA
Tajima DST
Written for Tajima commercial machines and read by nearly everything since. It stores stitch movements only — no thread colours at all, which is why a palette is assigned rather than read.
What to watch for
Provide a thread sequence with the DST
VP3 colour values cannot be stored in a standard DST stitch file. Change boundaries can be translated, but the receiving operator still needs the intended thread order and physical thread choices.
Check long stitches and jumps
DST represents at most 12.1 mm per axis in one movement record. Longer VP3 movements may be split, so compare the stitched shape and commands rather than expecting an identical file size or stitch count.
A preview cannot prove a machine setup
The screen shows the source stitch path. It does not model thread tension, fabric pull, automatic trims or a commercial head's configuration. Check the converted file and make a test stitch-out.
